What a hash value is

A hash function reads a file and produces a short string of letters and numbers. The same file always gives the same string; change one character and the string changes completely. In May 2026 the Supreme Court described a hash value as "synonymous with an electronic fingerprint".

Where you will need it

A certificate under s.63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam records the hash value of the electronic record and the algorithm used, in Part A (filled by the party) and Part B (filled by an expert). More on the certificate.

What it shows, and what it does not

A matching hash shows that a file has not changed since the value was noted. It does not show that what is inside the file is true, who made it, or when.
